Christmas (and a baptism) in Germany
Like many other families stationed in GK, or at least the Italian ones, when it was time to celebrate the important holidays like Christmas we packed up and went away for a few days. We went to see family, which for me meant either flying to New York or going to Naples, where most of my husband’s family lives. The year my son was born, though, was different. I didn’t think it was wise to travel with a two-month-old during the winter and so my husband and I decided early that we would stay local, stay home, and celebrate Weihnachten in GK, our first one in Germany.
I also thought it would be the perfect time to baptize my son. What better period than the one that marks the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God’s eternal love. The timing also worked because my mother would still be here after my son’s birth, and my sister and her family planned on flying over from New York. My sister was going to be my son’s godmother. I also made sure my husband informed his family about our plans early on so that they too could get organized. I figured it would be easier for them, especially since they were only a short plane ride away.
