Gebären

Gebären: to give birth to; Kind auch to bear (old, form), to be delivered of (old); (fig liter: = erzeugen) to breed (Collins German-English Dictionary)

I got pregnant after only about eight months in GK, and no, it wasn’t an accident. I guess I thought I could do it all during my German sabbatical, not just my PhD, which would help me with my future career, but a new baby too. I also really, really had to do it now. I was already in my late 30s and so if I was going to have a second child, it was now or never. I didn’t know how much longer my body or I, could handle pregnancy. I also figured the new baby would be about school age when it was time to leave and then I could go back to work full-time. I really wanted to have a career again. I’m ambitious, is that so bad?
