Lugman - A Poem

Serialisation of 'Waiting for a Hunter's Moon' by Simon Smith

Out on the strand
the tide is turning,
but he’s not done.

Not quite.

There’s always time for a few more
in the bucket,
the day’s reckoning;
true success squirms in the hand,
is measured by the pound.

Out on the strand
he turns to it again,
opening the sand,
spine straining in time with
the handle’s creaking rhythm,
always just this side of broken.

His life’s work’s sunk deep
into these empty foundations.

Their blunt wind-walls
encircle him.
